There appears to be an opening in the wholesale services market with Egypt now allowing fixed and mobile operators to launch new services. The National Telecom Regulatory Authority has said that fixed-line operator Telecom Egypt will be given a mobile services license by in 2013, likely to be around June/July.
T.E must develop a partnership with one of Egypt’s existing MNO’s rather than bid for spectrum which may affect its stake in Vodafone Egypt, although this is yet to be confirmed by the NTRA.
With the aim of unifying service licenses, TE is to open up it’s fixed-line operations to enable other Operators to offer customers retail services – again following the trend of increased mobile usage over fixed.
